This may be one of those uncomfortable “interesting times” that the Chinese proverb warns against, as governments decide what to do about online betting. Some governments are debating trying to ban it altogether, though they probably know that in the end, that tactic will ultimately be futile. But of course the internet has changed all that.

While online sportsbooks have vastly expanded your range of sports betting, they have also added elements of risk beyond what you might have faced with your local bookie. For one thing, while most of these sportsbook organizations are duly and legally registered in jurisdictions that allow them, some of them might be less scrupulous than you would want them to be. Before you engage in online betting at any of these sites, you’d need to read the industry news for a while to be sure which ones were truly reliable.

The American government has tried to put up obstacles to online betting for its citizens, but in the past couple of years, people have continued to find ways to engage in sport book online gambling. This type of sport gambling couldn’t be banned in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries, and it’s becoming pretty clear that it probably can’t be banned in the twenty-first either. Rather than continuing to make harsh laws that won’t stop the practice, it’s likely that the American government may capitalize instead, and revert to regulation and taxation.
